The Tankless Water Heater in Winter

Let me tell you a real experience about the tankless water heater in New York City. Some years ago, I was in New York for about six months. It was in October when I arrived and I stayed with a relative in the Borough of Queens. They lived in a three-storey tenement-type-house in Richmond Hills where three families lived; one in each floor. We stayed in the second floor and we were about ten staying in that one house. It was spacious enough and I was pretty happy with the fall season.

Winter came and I was beginning to feel the very cold weather. One day in December, while taking a bath I suddenly felt the icy cold water cascading down my body. It was freezing outside and my only comfort then was the relative warmth of the bathroom and the hot water. As I felt the bitter coldness of the water, I screamed and ran out of the bathroom, half naked and wondering if someone was trying to kill me. Truthfully, finding yourself suddenly showering in the icy cold water in the middle of winter is an experience you can never forget. So what happened? It turned out that the water tank reservoir ran out. There I was out in the corridor in just my bathroom towel waiting until the tank is filled up. It may just have been twenty minutes, but believe me, it was a long twenty minutes.

The next day, I had a talk with the landlord, needless to say that I was pretty pissed. Apologies were given and were accepted. I suggested he change the tank reservoir to one that has a larger capacity. He apologized again and said he could not afford it at present. There was not much I could do. Legal action? Maybe too much. Since then, I had to be very careful and check the water every time before I took the shower. Well, this lasted in the most of the cold winter.

One day while I was window shopping at the Time Warner Building, my attention was drawn to one item at a hardware store. Tankless water heater was written on a whiteboard above the item. My first thinking was: Does tankless mean the hot water will keep running? I browsed over the tankless water heater. While doing so, I was approached by a pretty sales lady asking if she could be of help. I threw several questions at her about the heater and she answered all of them knowledgeably. I told her my story, and she was assuring me that the tankless water heater would solve the problem of running out of the hot water from the traditional heater. Franky, at the beginning, I could not believe that such a small device at a low price like that can provide hot water for all people in the entire house. For believe me, I shower in hot water for almost an hour during winter. Luckily, I told the landlord this new discovery and he decided to try it. It turned out that the tankless water heater did work as what they described. Problem solved, that was the most pleasing and unforgettable experience I had in New York City during that winter time.

Now, if I go to New York again, every time, when I need rent a place to live for a while, I always ask the landlord the same questionon: Do you have a tankless water heater installed? You surely know why I ask this, don't you?

Most Important Reason Why Use Tankless Water Heater

Is tankless water heater really convenient? How convenient a tankless water heater is? Why choose tankless water heater? People always ask me these questions. Well, the answer is simple: The convenience that a tankless water heater brings is a given, and nobody can deny it. At the turn of a switch one can enjoy the soothing effects of a hot bath or the therapeutic advantage of a really hot shower. It is convenient and money-saving, as simple as it is.

After a hard and stressful day at the office, the hardworking guy or gal can fill up the tub with the water from the tankless water heater while sipping some wine. For some who truly likes a relaxing bath they can even light-up some scented candles and play some instrumental music on the radio while waiting for the bathtub to be filled up. Once it is filled you can lay down yourself on the warm relaxing water for hours and let the warm water sooth those sore joints and stiff muscles. On the other hand after a strenuous and healthy work out at the gym, you can proceed to take a few seconds of soothing hot bath to clean yourself up. The tankless water heater can provide you all this and more. One could really appreciate the convenience of this system during winter time when you have to wake up early in the morning to take a shower before going to work. Nobody takes a cold shower in winter so at a flick of a finger, you can have a hot bath immediately and be on your way to work in a matter of minutes. How conenient is this!

The other good thing about the tankless water heater is that it is accessible and readily available. It is not like some diamond jewelry that is scarce and expensive. It is available almost anywhere and at an affordable price. Do not go to a beauty shop or jewelry store to get one. Some may find them in a house ware section, but mostly they are found in a hardware store. It is not like a medicine that you need a prescription. You just need choose one that fits your needs.

One of the convenience of tankless water heater people always love is that it is easy to install. However, if you do not know anything about plumbing and electricity, do not do it yourself. Get a contractor. In a few hours and after spending some dollars, you can have the comfort of a tankless water heater at home. That's the real convenience: anyone can have one, it is so easy. It is not like having a water heating system where there is a tank and a pump, which is a kind of obsolete water heater, you need a mechanical engineer, a civil engineer, a license electrician in addition to the plumber. You need a mechanical engineer to compute the amount of water needed, the civil engineer to construct the entire system, the electrician to attach the electric power and the plumber, well that is self explanatory.

Well, do we still need reasons to explain why tankless water heater is convenient? Easy to get, easy to install, easy to use, what else can be more convenient? BTW, tankless water heater is one of the most energy efficient water heater in the market, it can lower your energy bill to more than 50%. Does this make it more convenient?

Common Problems Of Maintenancing Water Heaters

If you want the water heater to last longer than usually expected, then you need to know some basic information about the maintenance. The maintenance is very important because it will lower the risks of malfunctions.  Like any household appliances, the water heating system will require constant cleaning. At the same time, the overused parts of the system will need to be replaced.

The most common problem that will affect your water heater is rust. Since in most cases the tank of the heater is made of steel or some kind of alloys, it will be affected by rust sooner or later. If you noticed that a part of your heater has rusted, you will have to either cleaning it or replacing that part. Youshould never ignore even the slightest rusting on the tank, since it will spread on the whole container and, at that point, you will have to purchase a new water heater. However, if you used a tankless water heater, then rust will be a relatively less problem than tank water heater since tankless water heater does not have the tank.

If your heater is plugged into the gas line, make sure that there are no leaks. In order to perform the test, you will need to put soap on the gas tube. If the soap starts to bubble, you should immediately turn off the gas valve and call a technician to solve this problem. We do not suggest any attempt to replace the tube by yourself, because any mistake in installing it can lead to an unexpected explosion.

Sedimentation is another common issue with heater tanks. There is no way to prevent this from happening, so the best thing you can do is to flush the tank constantly. You will have to drain all the water in your heater's tank, which will flush out all the sediments inside. There is no need to turn off your water heater while flushing it. Again, if you used a tankless water heater, relatively, this will not be a big problem since a tankless water heater does not have the tank. P.S. that's why I like Tankless Water Heater more.

You should make sure that all the electrical wires are properly isolated. First, unplug the heater. If any of the wires is corroded, there is a high chance that it could short the circuit of the entire system. Therefore, you should isolate any such wires you find in the water heater. In case you are not sure you can do it by yourself, you should always call an electrician. Sometimes, it is better to replace the wires that are heavily corroded instead of patching them up.

Whenever you are doing maintenance on the water heater, you should be very careful. Always unplug the heater whenever you are working on the wires. Some parts of the heater are always hot. Therefore, do not touch the heater, unless it has been cooling off for a while.

If you followed the aforementioned guidelines, you should be able to properly maintain your heater and thus, increase its lifespan. Keep in your mind, compared to doing regular maintenance on the water heater, it is much more expensive to replace it with a new one, no matter you use tank or tankless water heater. The time and money you invested in the maintenance is well worth it.
